Discussing Police Body Cams in New York

This week, the New York Police Department officially rolled out its first camera-equipped cops. The court-ordered pilot program will outfit about 1200 cops with body cameras within the next year.

The policy comes from 2013, a federal court case that the police’s stop-and-frisk program unconstitutionally targeted minorities. And the judge in this case ordered the NYPD to test body cameras to curb this problem. Ian Head is at the Center for Constitutional Rights. He was part of the team involved in the 2013 court case, Floyd v. New York City. I spoke to him about his concerns about the new camera policy.
