While transgender students in New York may continue to use bathrooms that match their gender identity that may not be the case in more conservative states like Texas and North Carolina. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear testimony in late March about a transgendered student in rural Virginia who sued his school for violating Title NINE.
It is a provision in a 1972 law that protects against sex discrimination in schools that receive Federal Aid. Eliza Byard is the executive director of GLESN (GLI-SEN) – an organization dedicated to protecting LGBTQ rights in schools.
