A bomb threat forced the evacuation of The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island today. The FBI and NYPD helped the National Park Service clear hundreds of people from the sites. No one was hurt. Explosives experts and Park Service police are now investigating the incident.
Fire officials say a boom crane accident killed a man in midtown. It happened just before noon off 44th Street and Second Avenue. The FDNY says a small crane fell from a flatbed truck and pinned the man. He has not yet been identified.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is on track to receive nearly 1 billion dollars in federal loans for safety improvements. That money will be used to install systems that can automatically slow trains in case of emergency.
Ritchin_Cuomo_NC1: “It is the state of the art safety design for the system. Metro North and LIRR are implementing it on 1400 railcars and along 588 miles of track. This is a very big development.” (LENGTH: 0:14)
These systems are meant to prevent a repeat of the December 2013 Metro North crash that killed four people in the Bronx.
The MTA announced it will increase off-peak service on the 2, 7, M and L trains. Each of those lines saw more riders last year. The L saw the most. Service is expected to expand in December.
This weekend, the L is closed for maintenance from Eighth Avenue in Manhattan to Lorimer Street in Brooklyn.The New York Yankees and New York Mets will face off tonight in their first meeting of the season. The Mets have won 11 straight games. With a win tonight, they’ll be off to their best start in franchise history.
