From Columbia Radio News, I’m Katie Ferguson.

A large crane collapsed this morning in Tribeca, killing one and injuring three. The crane smashed a number of parked cars and fell, stretching an entire city block. The crash occurred just before 8:30 this morning while workers were lowering the rig in anticipation of high winds. In a press conference, Mayor de Blasio described efforts to clear debris.

Ferguson_Crane_NC1: Folks who live and work in the immediate area should assume a disruption that will go through the weekend and I think into Monday.  (0:07)

Subway service on the 1, 2, and 3 trains at Franklin and Chambers Streets was restored this afternoon.

Two NYPD officers were shot at a public housing complex in the Bronx last night during Mayor de Blasio’s State of the City address. The shooter opened fire while the officers were patrolling a stairwell, and later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Mayor praised the officers, saying:

Ferguson_Police_NC1: It’s another example of what our officers face every day keeping us safe. Not only on the streets of New York City but in the stairways, in the hallways of our public housing developments. (0:10)

The officers are in stable condition, with one released from the hospital this afternoon.

Bridgegate is back. The case was in court this morning — with a win for the defendants. Two former associates of New Jersey governor and Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie were indicted last spring on wire fraud, civil rights, and other charges relating to the September 2013 closing of the George Washington bridge. This morning, the U.S. District Judge overseeing the case said the pair could subpoena thousands of pages of related communications from Christie staffers. The trial is set to begin in May.

This afternoon, the New York City Council voted overwhelmingly in favor of pay raises — their own. Forty council members voted in favor of the hikes while seven voted against. The salary increase came alongside a measure that cut outside income for council members as well as bonuses for chairing committees. Katie Ferguson, Columbia Radio News.
