Mayor Bill De Blasio announced yesterday he’s running for President.
George Stephanopolous: What do you bring to the race that no one else can?
Bill De Blasio: George, working Americans deserve better and I know we can do it because I’ve done it here in the largest, toughest city in the country.
But more than three-quarters of New Yorkers don’t want the Mayor to run. That’s according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted last month. And though Mayor Giuliani ran AFTER his time in office, no sitting New York City mayors have run since Mayor John Lindsay in 1972.
Joseph Viteritti teaches New York City politics at Hunter College and wrote a book about Mayor De Blasio’s political vision and first term in office. I asked him how the Mayor’s campaign could affect city government and his ability to govern.
