Can Your Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

Host Intro: This week, we’ve been exploring an idea. We went to Riverside Park to find out — can an old dog actually learn a new trick? (00:07)

TOM LOBE: This dog is incapable of learning any tricks. He’s from Mexico. So maybe he would learn Mexican tricks.

ELAINE RONSON: I think normal old dogs will learn new tricks, but certain breeds and certainly any of the Eastern breeds, they basically tell us what they want us to learn. We have to learn new tricks for them. I like to think of Floppy as a… He’s very conservative he’s like a Republican dog. He’s sort of the Ted Cruz of dogs.

DAN CAHILL: I have an eight year old dog, who, about two months ago, finally figured out how to get into the locking garbage can in my kitchen. It’s a standard-sized kitchen garbage can and there’s just a lock on the lid, and he was able to knock it over and get the lid open and then pull all the garbage out and then look for fun stuff.

[Dog bark]

TYLER WALLACE: I think mostly, when it comes to tricks, it’s more the person than it is the dog that’s the limitation.

[Dog barks]

EMILY SIMMONS: Old habits can be hard to break, but certainly breakable. Cairo sit. Speak. Dog sounds. Good boy, that’s so good.

[Dog bark]

MATISSE ARAS: A dog is meant to be your best friend and I’m assuming if you’re not going to help them, then they’re not gonna get very far. Brooklyn is very stubborn but she knows how to sit and lay down, which is I am pretty proud of. Sit. Down. Down. C’mon. [Embarrassed laugh]. Brooklyn. Sit. Sit.
