Mayor Bill de Blasio named a new fire commissioner at a ceremony this afternoon at the Fire Academy on Randall’s Island. Daniel Nigro (nye-grow), who became the city’s fire chief after the September 11th attacks, will come out of retirement for the job. Nigro served more than three decades on the force and is highly regarded for his leadership after the attacks, de Blasio said.

And at a memorial ceremony held earlier today at police headquarters, de Blasio honored 13 police officers who died over the past year. Twelve died of illnesses contracted after doing rescue, recovery, and cleanup work at the World Trade Center site. Another was a traffic enforcement agent struck and killed by a truck in November.
Tomorrow, the last unidentified remains from those attacks on the World Trade Center will be moved from the city medical examiner’s office to a repository inside the new September 11th Memorial Museum. Forensic scientists continue trying to match bones fragments to DNA from the more than 1,115 victims whose remains have not been identified.
There’s an alphabet soup of outages and service changes on 16 subway lines this weekend. Many express trains will run local, with the biggest impacts expected on the 4-5-6 and A-C-E lines. Full details on the MTA’s website.
And it’s the last day of operation for Metro-North’s bar cars, the last left in the United States. The 50-year-old trains have been running on the New Haven line for more than 50 years. The cars are being taken out of service because they can’t connect to newer train cars.
In sports, the NBA has named former CitGroup and Time Warner chairman Dick Parkson as interim CEO Los Angeles Clippers. And round two of the NFL Draft kicks off at 7 tonight at Radio City Music Hall.
