Bottom of the Hour Newscast with Juan Torres-Falcon

Two people were fatally shot after a gunman opened fire at Central Michigan University residence hall, campus police said. The gunman is still at large. Police warned the public not to confront the 19-year-old suspect, saying he is considered dangerous and likely still in the area.

Neither victim was a student at the school, and investigators believe the shooting was related to some type of domestic problem. The school, which has about 23,000 students, urged everyone on campus to take shelter.

Campus police identified and released a photo of the suspect, James Eric Davis Jr., during an afternoon news conference. Surveillance evidence shows the suspect leaving the scene at 830am.

In the surrounding community, students and staff in the Mount Pleasant school district were told not to leave nine buildings.

The shooting occurred on the last day of classes before spring break at the Mount Pleasant campus, which is about 70 miles north of Lansing. Parents who were trying to pick up students were told instead to go to a local hotel where staff would assist them while the manhunt was ongoing.

Gymnastics champion Aly Raisman is suing the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics over sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of former team doctor Lawrence Nassar.

Nassar was sentenced earlier this year to 40 to 175 years in prison, after more than 100 women – including Raisman – said he abused them over the course of several years.

Raisman filed suit Wednesday. In it, she alleges the Olympic Committee was aware of Nassar’s abuse at the organization’s highest levels. She’s also calling for a full investigation into his misconduct.

USA Gymnastics responded to the suit today saying it’s committed to doing everything it can to prevent abuse from happening again.

And we are learning more about the tragic school shooting that killed 17 people in Parkland, Florida last month…

The Miami Herald is reporting that deputies with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office who were on scene during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas were ordered to form a perimeter around the building instead of confronting the gunman. A captain with the sheriff’s office gave that order.

The report is based on an analysis of the Sheriff’s Office dispatch log, and it raises more questions over how the department responded to the shooting.

Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Peterson, who was the school’s resource officer, resigned after a review found that he never entered the school building as the shooting happened.

A nor’easter will continue to bring wind and rain this evening. Saturday will still be brisk, but no rain and maybe even a little sunshine later in the day. Conditions will turn around just in time for the Oscars on Sunday. the race for Best picture is close…let’s just hope they open the right envelope.

Remember to bring your headphones along for your evening commute, because the MTA anticipates delays and potential service disruptions commuter railroads and above ground sunways due to high winds.
