CHRIS: Swedish director, Ma-LEEK BEN-jalou, passed away earlier this week. He was 36 and died of an apparent suicide. He won an Oscar for the documentary “Searching for Sugar Man.”
LARA: BEN-jalou spent four years and all of his money working on the film, about two South African fans trying to find American musician Sixto Rodriguez. Rodriguez achieved little success in the United States but became famous in South Africa. And he had no idea.
I spoke to Johan von Sydow (SEE-dough) about his friend and the emotional investment he made in the film.
